Patrick Baeuerle

This is an interview with 2019 Lennart Philipson Award winner Patrick Baeuerle who was a PhD-student at EMBL in Wieland Huttner's group from 1987 to 1988. In this interview, Patrick Baeuerle gives an insight into his research interests, especially his research concerning NF-kappa-B. He describes his later work in industry, his way into biotech companies and especially his foundation of MPM Capital. He also reflects the relationship between research and industry in this interview.

Mary Holmes

This is an interview with Mary Holmes who was the Librarian of EMBL Heidelberg from 1974 to 1998. In this interview, Mary Holmes describes how she became EMBL's first Librarian and the work she had to do in the first years of EMBL. Mary Holmes also talks about how she perceived the transformation of libraries in general and of EMBL's Szilárd Library in particular during the period she worked in this position, in particular with regard to computerisation. Furthermore, she talks about her impression of EMBL's first three DGs.

Heinrch Stuhrmann

This is an interview with the structural biologist Heinrich Stuhrmann who joined EMBL in 1976, leading the EMBL Hamburg site. In this interview, Heinrich Stuhrmann gives an insight into his work in the field of small-angle scattering. It contains Stuhrmann's descriptions of the relation towards the other EMBL sites and especially to the DESY-campus in Hamburg. Furthermore, Heinrich Stuhrmann reflects the scientific research and the conditions of use of the technical equipment in Hamburg while he was the scientific leader, but he also speaks about his later career at the GKSS and his later work in polarised neutron scattering using tyrosine radicals.

Edith Heard

This is an interview with the geneticist and cell biologist Edith Heard who has become EMBLs fifth DG in January 2019 and who is also head of department at the Curie Institute and professor at the College de France. In this interview, Edith Heard describes the development of her scientific career and of her interest in the genetic control of X-chromosome inactivation and its epigenetics. She also talks about how she came in touch with EMBL through Daniel Louvard. Furthermore, Edith Heard gives an insight of how she witnessed her election as DG and what ideas she has for EMBLs future in relation to research in molecular biology, but also in relation to the different EMBL sites and the administration.

Eero Vuorio

This is an interview with Eero Vuorio who has been a council delegate and Chairman of the EMBL council. In this interview, Eero Vuorio describes his career from working on molecular cloning of RNA and DNA to administration. He gives an insight of the work of the EMBL council, especially in terms of raising financial resources and in terms of the procedure of electing a new DG for EMBL. Furthermore, Eero Vuorio analyses the development of the administration of EMBL, also in connection to the different EMBL sites.

Andrew Miller

this is an interview with the molecular biologist Andrew Miller who worked for EMBL from 1975 to 1980 and who set up the EMBL outstation at Grenoble in that time. In this interview, Andrew Miller explains how his research interest changed from x-ray crystallography to the application of neutrons at the Grenoble outstation. He describes how he perceived the outstation, especially its relations to the ILL and the other scientific institutions in Grenoble, but also the scientific work that was done there at the time. Furthermore, Andrew Miller talks about the relations between Grenoble and the EMBL sites in Hamburg and Heidelberg, but he also reflects the general significance of neutron scattering for structural and molecular biology.

Tanmay Bharat

This is an interview with the 2019 John Kendrew Award winner Tanmay Bharat who was a PhD student at EMBL Heidelberg from 2008 until 2012. In this interview, Tanmay Bharat describes how he started working on pathogenic viruses in John Brigg's group. He also explains why he started working on bacterial antibodies using cryo-electron tomography. Furthermore, he reflects the upcoming of personalised medicine nowadays in this interview.

Leo Burger

This is an interview with the Head of the Mechanical Workshop Leo Burger who started working at EMBL Heidelberg in 1978. In this interview, Leo Burger describes his application process and how he was introduced to EMBL. He also explains some of the most important instruments that were developed in the Mechanical Workshop. Furthermore, Leo Burger talks about the social life at EMBL, but also about his contribution to founding EMBL etcetera and to designing the EMBL emblem. Apart from that, Leo Burger describes his work as a driver that he also did at EMBL for a certain time.

Paul Nurse

This is an interview with Paul Nurse who had been a geneticist and cell biologist at EMBL, In this interview, Paul Nurse especially reflects the differences between scientific research at universities in general and at EMBL. Beyond that, Paul Nurse describes his impressions of the Directors General Lennart Philipson and Iain Mattaj.

Ada Yonath

In this interview, Ada Yonath from the Weizmann Institute of Science who received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2009 talks about the development of her research on ribosomal crystallography. Especially her electron microscopy work together with Kevin Leonard and Sir John Kendrew is linked to the EMBL Heidelberg.
