Between 1970 and 1974, Mattaj studied for a BSc in Biochemistry at the University of Edinburgh, GB. He then moved to the University of Leeds, GB where he undertook doctoral research in the Department of Genetics between 1974 and 1978. His thesis was entitled “Studies on cloned GDH genes” and his work was supervised by Dr John Wootton. Mattaj stayed on in Leeds as a postdoctoral reseacher until 1979, at which point he moved to Friedrich Miescher Institute for Biomedical Research in Basel (CH) to work with Dr Jean-Pierre Jost (1979-1982). From 1982 to 1985, he carried out further postdoctoral research at the Biocenter, University of Basel, with Dr Eddy De Robertis.
Mattaj moved to EMBL Heidelberg in 1985 as a Group Leader in the Gene Expression Programme. From 1990 to 2005, he was the Programme Coordinator of the Gene Expression Programme (later the Gene Expression Unit). He was also EMBL Scientific Director from 1999 to 2005.
In 2005, Mattaj became EMBL's fourth Director General, taking over from Fotis Kafatos. He remained in this post until 2018.
In January 2019, Mattaj took up post as the first Director of the Human Technopole, a research institute for the Life Sciences, in Milan, IT.
