This page provides an overview of the fonds and collections catalogued in the EMBL Archive. Fonds are comprised of material that has been created and/or accumulated from a single origin, such as a person or an office. Collections are comprised of material that has been artificially grouped together because they share a common characteristic and/or come from a variety of sources.

Fonds

  • Mumna AL BANCHAABOUCHI material: This fonds contains material relating to Mumna Al Banchaabouchi, who led the Phenotyping Facility at EMBL Rome. After leaving EMBL she became founding Head of the Preclinical Phenotyping Platform at Vienna BioCenter Core Facilities in Austria. This material is catalogued in the Mumna Al Banchaabouchi material fonds.

  • Edmond BAUDOIN material: This fonds contains material from Edmond Baudoin, who illustrated a book which included Leó Szilárd as a protagonist. Szilárd, after whom the EMBL Szilárd Library is named, was involved in the early development of EMBO, the European Molecular Biology Organization, which went on to found EMBL.   • Max BIRNSTIEL material: This fonds contains material from Max Birnstiel, who became the first person to achieve gene isolation. He was on the Advisory Committee of EMBL in the 1970s and served as Chairman of the EMBO Council and as editor-in-chief of the EMBO Journal in the 1980s.   • Graham CAMERON material: This fonds holds material from Graham Cameron relating, in particular, to the development of the EMBL Data Library and the establishment of EMBL-EBI, the European Bioinformatics Institute, in Hinxton, GB. It is catalogued in the Graham Cameron material fonds.

  • Jacques DUBOCHET material: This fonds contains material relating to Jacques Dubochet and his 2017 Nobel award for his work in developing cryo-electron microscopy. It is catalogued in the Jacques Dubochet material fonds.

  • EMBL Council Secretariat material: This fonds contains material transferred from the EMBL Council Secretariat, including original headquarter and host site agreements as well as official agreements with other institutional entities, official bulletins and EMBL Council documentation.   • EMBL Finance material: This fonds contains material transferred from EMBL Finance, including Annual Reports and Research Reports. This material is catalogued in the EMBL Finance material fonds.

  • EMBL Human Resources material: This fonds contains material relating to EMBL's management of human resources, originating from EMBL Administration. This material is catalogued in the EMBL Human Resources material fonds.

  • EMBL Instrumentation material: This fonds contains material, including blueprints, documentation and instruments, produced and/or received by EMBL in the course of its activities in the area of instrumentation and technology development. This material comes from the EMBL Workshops in Heidelberg. This material is catalogued in the EMBL Instrumentation material fonds.

  • EMBL Training: This fonds contains material produced and/or received, from or by any of the EMBL sites, in the course of delivering training. It is catalogued in the EMBL Training fonds.

  • Eileen FURLONG material: This fonds contains material commemorating Fotis Kafatos, presented at the EMBO Workshop Molecular and developmental biology of Drosophila, which took place in Crete, Greece. The material originated from Eileen Furlong, Head of the Genome Biology Unit at EMBL Heidelberg. It is catalogued in the Eileen Furlong material fonds.

  • Frieda GLÖCKNER material: This fonds contains photographs documenting the establishment and setting up of EMBL in Heidelberg, including the inauguration of the EMBL Heidelberg laboratory. It is catalogued in the Frieda Glöckner material fonds.

  • Iain MATTAJ material: This fonds contains material relating to Iain Mattaj's scientific work, including his doctoral work at the University of Leeds and at the Mattaj Lab at EMBL between 1985 and 2012. It is catalogued in the Iain Mattaj material fonds.

  • Claire O'DONOVAN material: This fonds contains material relating to Claire O'Donovan's work in biocuration in the EMBL Data Library and at EMBL-EBI in Hinxton, GB. It is catalogued in the Claire O'Donovan material fonds.

  • Ernst STELZER material: This fonds contains material relating to Ernst Stelzer's development of confocal microscopy and imaging. It is catalogued in the Ernst Stelzer material fonds.

  • Keith WILLIAMSON material: This fonds holds personal items donated by Keith Williamson, former Administrative Director of EMBL. It is catalogued in the Keith Williamson material fonds

Collections

  • EIROforum material: EIROforum is a partnership of eight European scientific research organisations, including EMBL. This collection gathers material related to EIROforum's activities. This material is catalogued in the EIROforum material collection.

  • EMBL Institutional Publications: This collection brings together the institutional publications that EMBL prepares in the course of its activities, particularly those reporting to EMBL Council and the wider public. These publications contain scientific, administrative and social information about the institute. This material is catalogued in the EMBL Institutional Publications collection.

  • Heidelberg March for Science: The Heidelberg March for Science was a march held in Heidelberg on 22 April 2017 to celebrate science and put the spotlight on the place of evidence-based knowledge in society. The EMBL Archive collected material on the day in Heidelberg. This material is catalogued in the Heidelberg March for Science collection.

  • Marketing and Publicity: This collection gathers objects that have been prepared at different times by EMBL for marketing and/or publicity purposes. This material is catalogued in the Marketing and Publicity collection.

  • Oral Histories Programme: In 2016, the EMBL Archive started an Oral Histories Programme. This supports the goals of the EMBL Archive by gathering interviews that, together, capture the development, history and on-going missions and achievements of EMBL and its people specifically and the (European) molecular biology landscape more generally. These interviews are catalogued in the Oral Histories Programme collection.
